Prognosis ~ April 16th @ LOOP

by J-Slyde

Substance Sounds in conjunction with LOOP pres the newest concept in forward thinking nightlife!
Prognosis - April 16th @ LOOP

With two successful events under their belts the Prognosis krew are lining up for their third offering back at Loop. Yet again partying until stumps, their last event was nothing short of brilliant. Quality music, eye opening visuals and a fantastic crowd made for a fool-proof recipe. Not missing a beat, the krew were quick to lock-in a third date and are getting ready to do it all over again come April 16th.

Leading the charge this time round we’re very honored to welcome Melbourne’s own Prog pinup, Steve May. Having been play-listed by everyone from Tiesto to Carl Cox, Steve’s production is world class. Not just limited to his productions, as a DJ he has championed a versatile and genre-bending sound headlining shows across the globe.

After a mind blowing performance at our first event we’re also very happy to welcome back JaseFOS for a live Laptop set. If you haven’t seen his mastery of all things electronic then you must take this opportunity by the horns! Responsible for “that track” and producing, releasing, DJing and performing for the past 15+ years, Jase is a seasoned veteran when it comes to electronic music. Needless to say, the dancefloor will be in good hands when he graces the decks!

Delivering his fresh twisted take on everything electronic, Kultrun also joins the ranks to bring his unique production style to the floor. Guaranteed to have you stroking your chin whilst madly bopping all over the floor, this kid has had his work play-listed by everyone from Dubfire to MODE and even Armin Van Burren. Expect a set full of the highest caliber home-grown Prog and Tech you can poke a stick at!

Alas, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns this time round as Taran M is set to deliver one of the last sets of his career. The original inceptor of Substance and Co-founder with J-Slyde, the man is hanging up the Electronic promoting and djing booty’s indefinitely as he heads off to Alaska to hunt wild game using only a toothcomb and a Denny’s Breakfast burrito (Actual events of Taran’s future may differ from written dialog). Having played pretty much every electronic genre, graced major parties like Two Tribes, Godskitchen, Adventjah, major club residencies and of course running a filthy muck with the Substance crew, Taran’s set will be a display of everything he has exposed us to whilst being behind the decks at Substance (Bring sunnies; he’s a pale chap!).

Support duties for the night will be handled by the extremely talented Prognosis Pin-up boys J-Slyde and Simon Murphy, whilst visual duties will be handled by the one and only vdmo Kstati – whom left the crowd gobsmacked at our last event from his utterly astounding visuals.

So book the appointment, take the sick day from work and prepare to bulk bill your way to the Perfect Prognosis as Loop bar prepares for another diagnosable night of auditory mayhem.

Thats it thats all… for more than awhile

by Taran M

After just under 10 years behind the decks, countless genres explored and so many amazing parties I’m officially hanging up my full time DJ/ Promoters hat. I have had an amazing time all through my career, especially the last 4 years but for me, my interest in dance music has fallen by the wayside. I’m not going to do the cliché rant of “The music has changed or the people have changed.” Cause the music has progressed and I haven’t and I’m cool with that. For a long time now the whole events thing has been a bit taxing, especially having to balance workloads and my ambition to progress “At the moment” just isn’t there, well not in the DJ sphere/ club sphere anyway. When I first came up with the idea for Substance I was living up in Sydney after an intense three years spinning in the hard trance scene and after hustling up Jordz, Rich and Simon to join me and sharing the idea, it became clear it was always going to be for the fun. Unfortunately it really isn’t now, for me anyway.

I’ll still be involved with Substance behind the scenes. Doing the write up’s and articles, as one of my main reasons for finishing up is to focus more in my writing, both articles and music (mouka first project is the Confide!). I may even pop in and play a cheeky set once every six/ twelve months. I’m hoping to play a couple of sets as farewell’s so will keep everyone posted.

There are a few thank you’s I’d like to put out there for the last 10 years. First of all Andrew Golden, Garth Lategan and Kane Liistro. Andy without your help I would never have become a resident at all of the club’s I held residencies at especially Kandy back in the day, I always loved Elevation and ETB and thank you for the lessons, skills learnt.  Kane thank you soooo much for the support when I was first starting out, you landed me my first ever gig and I’ll be eternally thankful. Garth, you to promoted me and helped me get my name back in the day, what you used to do made so many people happy be it DJ’s, punters or the people that worked for you.  My old manager Grant, thank you for all the promotion back in the day, especially the Online and Onboard parties.

Luke @ 3D thank you so much for all of those gig’s starting out,  my first club gigs were amazing, especially the main room sets, the experience I learned from your venue was invaluable. Scotty and Kelsta…OMG the best year of my life was playing at Billboards and I have nothing but love for the both of you for the main room love @ both billboards and RMH whilst being a resident there, GK and Kryal were epic fun! Finally in the early years, Brendan AKA “ Soul-T” dude you got rocks!  Your an amazing promoter and back in the day a real mentor to me, nothing but respect for you.

Finally current day! Massive thank you to Jordz, Rich, Mouka, Simon and all of the guests (well not all of them, to be quite frank a couple of guests we have had fall under the word C$%t. You know who you are, actually you probably don’t!) that have played for us for kicking the dream with me at Substance. Thanks for the awesome memories and times, be it Soft belly, Highlander or the Terminus. I want to personally thank Jordz for really turning my half baked Idea into a reality, without you I doubt it would still be kicking the goals it is. I look forward to seeing the revolution continue from the back seat. Importantly all of my friends and my mum and dad who have supported my music at any stage, Thank you so much for all of the good times.

Rockin it!

Melbourne’s Beautiful Scene and why it’s the centre of the earth

by Taran M

When it comes down to brass tacks, we all know which city in Melbourne will forever hold the title of Australia’s electronic music capital and it is of course…Melbourne.

From the very first times I started going out, on reflection it was always clear to me that there is something special about the Melbourne scene. Whether it be Progressive, Tech, Psy, Hard trance, electro, drum and bass our beautiful city carries its flag highly on our mantelpiece.

So why does Melbourne work? Why is it possible? Who wrote the book on love and why does the toilet flush when I haven’t even pressed the button; I think I am digressing a touch.

From the time I first started going out late last century (no really 1997!) the thing even as a newbie party goer that I noticed was that the different genre’s of electronic, majorly techno, House and trance/ hard house all intertwined in some way. Whilst purists and pundits did exist there was co-existence and intermingling between all factions. From its inception Hardware insisted on blending tech and house, there CD releases on Shock Records would be split into a house disc and a techno disc. From the onset of both Hard Kandy and Bass Station, Hard trance and house music and electro was always paralleled albeit in a side room. Hard Kandy went as far as having two house DJ’s playing on rotation for warm up sets. The much famed and missed NRG parties run by smile Police always encouraged a plethora of music styles and whilst very much a “rave” spectacle never failed to mix genres on any stage at any time. This establishment of diversity and working together basically galvanised relationships and genre based promoters. And while at any given period a genre can hold popular demand it has never been seen to issue “coup d’état” amongst the others.

All you have to do is look at the festivals that Melbourne holds to understand exactly how deep Melbourne’s scene runs. Since the hallowed Days of Every Picture tells a story, Belfast and the early years of Hardware there has always been an “Enjoy Music” at major events. Rainbow Serpent, Summerdayze, Welcome, Good Vibrations, Stereosonic, Hot BBQ, and Future music are festivals that Bred from Melbourne promoters and have become state and even national success stories. At grass roots smaller scale promoters have been encouraged more than discouraged by the bigger promoters. More so Melbourne has bred promoters to appreciate the party more than the cash. It is amazing how quite a few of the middle tier production companies run at next to nothing budget’s just to throw a party, just to get people shaking it…like a 35mm picture.

There has never really been any such “stand over” tactics by larger scale promotion companies to undermine smaller event organisers. There is a healthy buffer and intermingling between the likes of lower, middle and upper tier promoters that helps breed a pro active approach to maintaining and growing electronic music. There is always going to be the fuckwit promoter who doesn’t pay his DJ or the arrogant, self absorbed money hungry promoter/ rapist that springs up from time to time. The only problem is that us promoters all talk to each other in one form or the other and sooner or later the evangelistic, fly by night promoter is found out, I can think of a few that have all to quickly sunk under their ego’s own mistakes.

It’s always going to be about the talent and in the words of Hunter S. Thompson in Fear and Loathing “We’re chock full of that!”. Australia’s first two early superstar DJ’s came from the Melbourne scene, Will E Tell and Richie Rich. I think sometimes we are spoilt to the point of under appreciation of the amount of talent around in Melbourne. Whether they be DJ’s or producers the quality of the gene pool in Melbourne cannot be under estimated. Whether you’ve loved Hard trance/ house, love it now or hate it with a passion; you cannot ignore the talent we have in Melbourne. The original Kandy crew of Scott Alert, Ajax and Krash are still some of the most talented producers and Dj’s you will find. NFX is one of those producers that can only be truly found once in a blue moon (I think we can claim Dr. Willis as well!).

Producers of all genres whether it be the Progressive/ tech stylings of Blinky (Beat Geek Records), the tech house/ electro antics of Kalus, Trance extraordinaire Steve May (5am/ Armada) showcase the depth of Melbourne’s talent. So much so that many of the above names have featured on the set lists and podcasts of such international stars as Dubfire, Armin Van Burren, Tiesto and Carl Cox. We can’t forget our biggest national dance music export, TV Rock who also hail from our beloved city. We have even thrown a major contender into the ever popular “Mash arena” in the vein of Substance’s own Mouka. Seriously this guy makes Girl Talk sound like a poor man’s Bob Hope. To list the talent in Melbourne in terms of DJing would require an almost dictionary like bible. Melbourne is “Spin city” a haven for the master of the pioneer, mac and now the almost extinct 1200’s.

Finally this article would be a miss without giving praise to the Melbourne crowd. I have partied in every city and played in most of them as well and I can easily say that WE ARE THE SHIT! You won’t find a friendlier crowd on a dance-floor than in Melbourne. More so Melbourne’s regular punters don’t just go out, they live and breathe the scene. Not so much as scenesters, but more as crowds that love their music, support their cause and promote our city for what it is, the centre of Australia’s electronic music scene.

Substance Rooftop Party ~ Review!

by J-Slyde

In the wake of the Rooftop Party, all we’ve heard is good things about how the day went and how everyone enjoyed themselves. For those unfortunate few that missed out on the day InTheMix.com.au sent down their trusty reviewer, Alianne, to cover the day. She’s done extremely well in capturing what was one of our best events to date. Special thanks to her for the kind words 🙂

Full article can be found HERE

The Substance crew specializes in amazing parties featuring quality tunes and lots of shenanigans, Rather than bringing in internationals, they embrace the best of Melbourne’s considerable local talent, resulting in grooving sets of a variety of different genres. Previous gigs have included Danny Bonnici at their last Terminus Rooftop party, and Mixed Substance at Brown Alley, showcasing a selection of different locals such as J-Slyde. Tonight, Melbourne’s prog legend Luke Chable would be joining some of the usual crew, along with Muska and Alison Spong, to name just a few.

It was my first time visiting the Terminus Hotel, a cosy two-storey bar in Abbotsford, and even from the outside, I could hear tunes drifting down from the rooftop, making me excited to get inside. Past a fireplace and up a flight of stairs were two rooms with a few people chilling on couches, but the main party was outside on the covered balcony. The weather forecast for the Saturday was for cold and rain, so the dancefloor was completely covered over with plastic along most of the sides too, protecting the booth. Luckily Melbourne’s notorious skies decided to grace us with sun shining onto the dance floor for a big chunk of the afternoon. Dancing in the sun, sunnies on, to deep bassy tunes was amazing!

Taran M was finishing up his set when I arrived, playing a fun and funky mix of tracks, with some remixes of commercial tracks thrown in (I think I may have heard Jay-Z and Linkin Park). Alison Spong was up next, popping her Substance cherry. She played deep progressive tracks, with some excellent melodies thrown in. Not too full on, and ideal for that point in the afternoon, when the majority of the crowd began to arrive. Her mixing was spot on and her set time was ideal, just as the crowd began to swell for the evening.

The upstairs bar, conveniently located at the back of the rooftop area, was kept busy. Their snakebite pints, pink and deadly, were a big hit! Next up came Simon Murphy, who opened with a very amusing remix of Duck Sauce’s Barbra Streisand. He was playing deeper and techier tunes, and soon had the dancefloor moving. I think I heard a D-Nox and Beckers track or two in his set; nice and progressive.

J-Slyde took over around 6pm, and took the party up another level. The sun was shining through the plastic walling behind the booth, dusting the rooftop dancefloor in golden light, as he brought out the breakbeat. A selection of slightly cheesy but oh so good tunes sent the dancefloor wild. Bouncy breaks like The Stanton Warriors’ Still Here transitioned smoothly into techy house, and back into more hip-shaking breaks. Prodigy vs Elite ForceSmack my Force Up was probably the standout tune for me, an excellent mash-up of two banging songs. I loved the placement of the booth right in front of the dance floor so we could see watch his skilful mixing. By the time his hour was up the crowd was ready to dance even more for Chable.

Luke Chable opened with Timo Mass’s Better Make Room (James Holden remix), groovy and a little bit techy, and continued with a selection of some of his classic progressive tunes: his remix of Cloud Cuckoo by Sasha bathed the crowd in melody, and he smoothly blended in several excellent tracks by James Holden, an artist who complements his own style very well. Chable’s classic remix of Dream On was a 10-minute journey through the best of melodic progressive house.

He eventually brought his set to a close but gave into the crowd, playing as an encore PQM’s You are Sleeping, sending the rooftop wild. Overall his set showcased some excellent progressive classics, but I was very disappointed he didn’t feature even one of his classic breakbeat tunes and remixes, especially Melburn, which would have been beautiful on the rooftop. His set did take the energy level down a notch from J-Slyde’s set.

Next up, Muska took the music deeper with a dancey set of rhythmic deep house and tech. The rooftop was beginning to empty out a bit now; with the onset of night it had gotten quite chilly, and despite dancing and a few scattered heat lamps I was feeling the cold. I stuck around for most of the hour, digging Muska’s selection and having a little more room on the dancefloor, but eventually decided to call it an excellent evening and take my weary self home.

Substance put on a stellar party; the crowd was wonderfully friendly, the venue was comfy and perfect for an afternoon gig, and the music was amazing throughout the night, and interestingly varied. The weather and sunshine was the icing on top of a very delicious evening.
