PIG & Dan ~ April 27th @ Brown Alley

by J-Slyde

Pig & Dan - April 27th @ Brown Alley

UNDER ONE ROOF & SUBSTANCE PRESENT PIG & DAN (Bulletdodge, Cocoon recordings / ESP)

Looking back, the meeting of minds during a chance encounter of Igor Tchkotoua (Pig) and Dan Duncan on a flight to Spain in 1999, sounds like the opening scene of a Hollywood movie, certainly neither musician could have the written the script of what happened next. Recognizing a mutual philosophy, and using their own musical background that dated back to the start of the dance scene, they combined to create a slick production outfit that would entrance clubbers and soon win compilation support from the likes of Sander Kleinenberg, Felix Da Housecat, John Digweed and Nic Fanciulli.

Most significantly though, their tech tour de force ʻOh Yeahʼ (2005) signaled the start of their ongoing relationship with Cocoon Recordings, which has seen their status as DJs and producers soar on a global level.

From humble beginnings in late 80s, playing the tea boy and exploring the workings of a recording studio, both Igorʼs & Danʼs experiences stem from an era of primitive technology and old fashioned production techniques. Danʼs own history saw him as part of the hugely successful drum ʻnʼ bass act ʻIntenseʼ, during which time he also played alongside luminaries such as LTJ Bukem and Fabio & Grooverider.

When Pig&Dan decided to join forces, they began a truly prolific production schedule – with 18 releases in just over year – establishing their reputation as producers of pulsating electronic music that straddled dark house and high energy techno whilst creating their signature of twisted and experimental breakdowns. These releases on their label Submission would prove to be merely a stepping stone though.

In 2005, they commenced Sonic Society and focused more toward the edgy minimal that would attract Cocoon Recordings, as well as all the leading jocks such as Sven Vath, Loco Dice and Tiefschwarz. As testament to their continued master production skills, the disturbingly dark ʻOh Yeahʼ has been followed by 8 more releases on the seminal Frankfurt imprint, including their own artist album, ʻImagineʼ. During this time, their profile as in-demand remixers has reached the point where such electronic pioneers as Underworld were coming back for more!

Stand still too long and youʼll be knocked down, so the latest twist in the Pig&Dan story sees Igor (aka Pig) coming back to the wheels of steel and joining Dan after a long break in rehab. The Duo are stronger than ever and have recently brought their new label “ONOLOG” to the Techno stage.

Pig&Dan are currently involved with collaborations with techno masters such as Sephan Bodzin, Mark Reeve, Samuel L Sessions, Gustavo Bravetti, MiniCoolBoyz, Mihalis Safras and Butch to mention a few. The new leaf has been turned with their ONOLOG upbringing plus their big move to DJ management masterminds Plantage13. Now theyʼre set for yet another rocket around the globes club and festival venues projecting their positive sounds.

It is clear that After opening Cocoon club for 2011 with a capacity venue rocking, their schedule is going to be yet another year of good times shared by the masses. Pig&Dan ́s favorite labels Cocoon and Terminal M are at the ready for yet another landslide of monster releases so watch and of course listen out, there is a party in the air.

Hybrid, Solar Fields, Rack N Ruin and Tetrameth ~ Sept 23rd @ Brown Alley

by J-Slyde

Hybrid, Tetrameth, Rack n Ruin, Solar Fields Flyer

UPDATE: We’ve been lucky enough to join forces with Jungle Tiger and have secured Tetrameth and Solar Fields! Tickets are at the same price – be quick, as they will sell out!! Further details below.

MIXED MESSAGES, ROCK LIKE THIS, JUNGLE TIGER & SUBSTANCE SOUNDS PRESENT…

Hybrid Sound System (UK)

Since first bursting onto the scene with the now classic album Wide Angle in 1999, the Swansea, Wales-based Hybrid have been known as one of the most forward thinking and technically skilled acts in electronic dance music. Blurring the line between in-studio production and live presentation, Hybrid are one of the few remaining dance acts to perform live with a classic band setup.

Though, much has changed on the road to Hybrid’s fourth artist album Disappear Here. Most notable is the addition of Hybrid’s third member – singer/ songwriter Charlotte James – to go along with founders Chris Healings and Mike Truman.

Charlotte’s impact is marked as Disappear Here is truly an album of real songs and not merely dance beats with vocals on top. It offers a lot more than anything Hybrid has ever previously written and pushes boundaries in every way.

With Disappear Here, Hybrid have managed to create an epic and unique sound which has progressed dramatically from its original dance inception but still retains much of what makes electronic music so exciting. The album features guest vocals from Tim Hutton, drums from Alex Madge and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

Rack & Ruin (UK)

This young London producer has already harnessed the support of BBC’s Annie Mac, Nick Grimshaw, Kissy Sell-Out, Toddla T, DJ Zinc, Fake Blood, Shy FX, Jack Beats, Boy 8-Bit, and many more with his latest releases.

Remix credits include Nas & Damien Marley, I Blame Coco, Aggro Santos, The Nextmen feat. Groove Armada & Ms. Dynamite, Zero 7, and The Freestylers. Future projects include collaborations with Island Records, Southern Fried Records, Fat! Records, MC Navigator, Slarta John (Basement Jaxx), new vocalist Jessie Ware, and many more established vocalists and artists.

Solar Fields (SWEDEN)

Swedish based electronic music composer Magnus Birgersson aka Solar Fields built a unique sonic universe with a constant shifting from high tech ambient flow into broken beats, powerful sequences and fragmented loops. As a natural born multi-instrumentalist, Magnus plays the Veena, sitar, drums and guitar and is also deeply connected to any sound processing machine. Constantly exploring new musical horizons in his famous high-tech station called Studio Jupiter, Solar Fields likes to develop an evolving dream (“unfinished” as he likes to mention) and offers an intense listening experience.

The productive discography of Magnus Birgersson should be considered like a following of drifting masterpieces : 9 solo albums, 3 collaboration album with French composer Aes Dana under the name H.U.V.A. Network and more than 60 compilations features for various labels. Often classified as ambient downtempo. Solar Fields music in fact goes further than these boundaries propulsed by his talent for sculpting hypnotic harmonics and layering sounds.

Tetrameth (AUS)

Tetrameth is the brain child of Melbourne based musician/producer, Peter Hayes. Peter has been in the laboratory since 2003, cooking a potent brew of eclectic psychedelic progressive. Studying the art of music & several instruments from an early age. Making the shift from playing & touring in bands, to writing and producing in a studio was an inevitable and easy transition. Tetrameth’s sound has been quoted as “An extremely eclectic concoction. Cleverly constructed progressive, with an unmistakably organic undertone. The end result is a beast of its own.”(Beat magazine-2007)

Peter is a graduated musician, with a diploma in contemporary music, & majored playing guitar at the “Conservatorium of Music”. Tetrameth is psy trance at a world-class level, truly pushing, and surpassing boundaries previously set within the genre.

2010 has seen Dave Juric solidify himself in the Melbourne scene, playing regularly at some of the best venues and best parties over the year. The year started with an almighty bang as Clarity hosted Kasey Taylor and Luke Chable, a progressive fan’s wet dream. This was Dave’s first warm up for an ‘A grade’ DJ, and received an extremely positive response. Once again he was asked to fly up to Sydney this time to play at the infamous Chinese Laundry and has maintained his strong relationship with Darkbeat, being selected to be a part of the Darkbeat Local Sessions concept, focussed primarily on appreciating the talent we’ve got in our own backyard. Throughout the year Dave continued his involvement with Dynamic & Room680 which culminated on Cup Eve, as Deep toured another progressive legend from Israel, Moshic.

His sound has again diversified, being inspired by the immense amount of quality music available at any given weekend in Melbourne. It’s not uncommon to hear anything from down- tempo trip hop and drum & bass through to jackin’ Chicago house in one of his sets however generally likes to meander through the house & techno genres without forgetting his progressive roots and forever mindful of both time and space.
